Keeping children safe around water constitutes following the four key actions of Royal Life Saving's Keep Watch Campaign:

Supervise. Actively supervise children around water
Restrict. Restrict children’s access to water
Teach. Teach children water safety skills
Respond. Learn how to respond in the case of an emergency
Children must be supervised by an adult when in, on or around water. Active supervision means focusing all of your attention on your child, all of the time. You must be within arms’ reach, interacting with your child and be ready to enter the water in case of an emergency. Our research shows that any distractions, such as using mobile phones or doing household chores, while children are near water increases their risk of drowning.

Restrict access to water by correctly installing and regularly maintaining a pool fence with a gate that self-closes and self-latches. Royal Life Saving’s home pool safety checklist can help. Remember to never prop the gate open.

All water bodies with a depth of 30cm or more need to be fenced in accordance with State or Territory legislation. This includes portable pools, such as inflatable and wading pools.

Securely store all pool toys out of sight and reach of children and never leave toys in the pool area when not in use.

Teaching children water safety skills is an important step in ensuring they grow up to become confident around water. Familiarise children with water by enrolling them in water awareness classes, spending time with them in the water and establishing basic water safety rules.

All parents are encouraged to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Knowing how to respond in an emergency could mean the difference between life and death.

Farm Water Safety Farms contain many drowning haz Farm Water Safety

Farms contain many drowning hazards. While dams are the most common location for child drowning deaths, troughs, irrigation channels, water tanks, swimming pools, and even rivers and lakes, pose an equally significant risk to children.

Easy access to water and a lack of direct adult supervision by parents or carers are the main factors in child drowning deaths on farms.

While it is not always feasible to fence off large water bodies, there are some simple measures that can make the farm environment as safe as possible.

Active supervision should be a priority at all farm locations. Children must be supervised at all times in, on, or around water on farms.

Child safe play areas can help parents to supervise children but they are not designed to replace active supervision. 

Child safe play areas restrict a child’s access to water by creating a barrier between the child and a drowning hazard. 

They are particularly effective in preventing a young child from gaining access to water which cannot be fenced, such as dams on farms. 

A Keep Watch @The Farm ‘Please Close the Gate’ sign should be placed on the child safe play area to remind people to close the gate. 

The gate should be self-closing and self-latching and never be propped open.

Fill in any unused holes where water can gather such as ditches, dips and postholes. Water storage such as wells and tanks should be securely covered.

Pool Toy Safety Pool toys are any objects that ar Pool Toy Safety

Pool toys are any objects that are used for entertainment in and around the water. They include noodles, floaties, dive rings, inflatable rings, kickboards, beach balls and inflatable rafts. They can be a lot of fun, but it is important to be aware of the dangers they can present.

When left in and around the pool they attract the attention of children who may try to get through or over a fence or reach out to try and get the toy from the pool’s edge. For this reason, all pool toys must be securely stored out of sight and reach of children and never left in the pool when not in use.

Toys, such as floaties and noodles, can also make a child seem more competent in the water, providing parents with a false sense of their child’s swimming ability. This can mean parents leave the pool area to do something else and do not actively supervise their children.

Pool toys can also be used to reach someone in trouble, although only as a last resort. Royal Life Saving recommends using a reach pole or a personal flotation device as part of a ‘reach or throw rescue’ so make sure you store one of these items around the pool for emergencies.

When purchasing pool toys, you should check the age and weight ranges recommended for them, ensuring your child is not too old or too heavy to use them. You should also ensure that children do not use pool toys for any purpose other than that for which they are recommended. Floaties should have three inflatable chambers and fit snugly around the child’s arms.

Pool toys that are inflatable, should be deflated when not in use, checked for leaks before use and all pool toys regardless of whether they are inflatable or not, should be stored securely, out of the sight and reach of young children. Never leave pool toys in the pool when they are not in use.

Children must be supervised whenever in, on, or around water. Pool toys do not replace the need for active adult supervision.

Children should be supervised by a responsible adult at all times while in the bath. This means supervising within arms’ reach and never leaving a child alone. 

Take your child with you if you must leave the bathroom. 

Do not leave young children in the care of older children, as they may not perceive the amount of danger a young child may be in.

It is important to be prepared and have everything ready for bathing, such as the child’s clothes and towel. Cold water should be run first and turned off last. 

Test the water temperature to ensure it is comfortably warm. Water should be kept to a minimum depth, using only enough water to wet the child with your hands.

Make sure you empty the bath after use and close the bathroom door when it is not in use.

Bath time is also a good time to start your baby's journey to becoming water aware. For example, gently pour water over your baby's head and face, and help them to experience floating on their front and back, while feeling the movement of water as you sway them forwards and backwards. 

All of this helps to make your baby happy and comfortable, and more familiar with the feel of water.

🛁Bath time is an essential part of caring for a child and is often part of the daily routine. However, there are a number of bathroom hazards, including risk of drowning, risk of scalds, electrical appliances and potential poisons. 

❌BATH TIME SAFETY

🧽Make sure that you are always there and paying attention when babies, toddlers or children under five years are in the bath.

🧽It’s a good idea to get everything ready in advance (e.g. towels, clean clothes, nappies) so you can stay with your child.

🧽Stay within arms’ reach of your child, even when using a bath seat or cradle – a bath seat on its own won’t keep your child safe.

🧽Don’t leave older siblings to supervise as they may not recognize when a small child is in danger, or react as quickly as an adult.

🧽Ignore all distractions that could take your attention away from your child, such as a phone call or the doorbell. If you have a lot going on, delay bath time until another adult is around to help.

🧽Empty the bath immediately after use.

🧽Run only enough water for washing and play – belly-button height is plenty for a child who can sit up on their own.

🧽Consider keeping the bathroom door shut when not in use, so young children can’t get to taps on their own.

💙 Why would you join Water Aerobics or any acti 💙 Why would you join Water Aerobics or any activity that deals with water? What is Aqua Aerobics?

Aqua aerobics is basically everything the name implies. You’ll be involved in a range of cardiovascular activities all in the water. It doesn’t have to be related to swimming, or even require you to submerge your head – rather, you’ll just be working out surrounded by a medium different to air.

What makes it a great and effective form of exercise is due to the buoyancy properties of water. In fact, Swim and Sweat state that you can experience up to 90 per cent less weight in water!

Many physical therapists recommended some form of light water exercises to help recover from injuries as working out in water has far less impact than on land. There is also less chance of falling or injury because of the support from the water.
